Dogecoin Mining 101

The Basics:
Dogecoin mining is using processing power (from a computer processor or graphics processor in a computer, an application specific integrated circuitry device (ASIC) or many various units working together in the case of cloud computing) to confirm data used for the validation of Dogecoin transactions themselves.  In simplest terms, miners get paid Dogecoin to run a program in the background of their computer, or on a cloud network.  The value of this and why it is done can be read about with a simple search on your favorite search engine, but the details can get quite complicated and are not appropriate for this blog.

Unlike deflationary cryptocurrencies (like Bitcoin), there is no limit to how many Dogecoins can be produced.  A block schedule determines the rewards given to miners for each block produced.  The most common, and efficient way to mine for Dogecoin is by joining a "pool" of miners, which use the same underlying program and concepts as solo miners, but share the rewards of using combined processing power, which ultimately means more Dogecoin is earned by members of a mining pool as compared to a miner that works solo.

Join a mining pool:
For many reasons, Dogecoin miners use p2pool to ensure the coin's network security.  litecoin-p2pool is the actually the best pool to join because you don't actually have to join anything.  You just need a Litecoin wallet with your Dogecoin wallet.  Why litecoin?  Dogecoin implemented AuxPoW in version 1.8 and later, which combined the hashing power of Litecoin's network with Dogecoin mining.  This means miner can earn both coins at the same time when mining!  Litecoin p2pool provides real-time stats reporting, and direct payments to your wallet when a block is found by ANY p2pool miner, so it gives you the same benefits of large multipools. The next steps will reference back to the litecoin p2pool mining pool.

1. Determine if CPU or GPU mining is best for your hardware.
If you have a graphics card (NVIDIA, Radeon, etc.) you will want to use a GPU mining program.  This will give you the best return of Dogecoin for your time spent mining (anytime you choose to run the program... which can be easily setup to run automatically when you login to your computer).  If you do not have a compatible graphics processor, you can still use the CPU processing power to mine Dogecoin.

2. Download the appropriate CPU or GPU mining program.
Save the files to your local hard drive (C:\miner\minerd.exe) for example.

cgminer (ASIC/GPU) - download link

cudaminer (NVIDIA GPU) - download link

minerd (CPU) - download link

3. Create and save a text file (minelitecoin.bat) to configure the miner program.

Shibe Tip: If you save this new text/batch file to your Start Menu/Programs/Startup folder, it will run automatically when you login to Windows.  If you save the minedogecoin.bat to any other location, you can run your mining program by simply clicking the new file.

If you saved the mining program in the location shown in Step 2, you will only need to copy the text below and replace the wallet address shown with your Dogecoin wallet address.  Then save the text file with the name "minedogecoin.bat" and click the new file... you will start mining!

cgminer --scrypt -o litecoin-p2pool.com:9327 -u LcjmUck1PB2dZun9My9N2W8hwFpAfeEkfP/0 -p x

Another common method of mining cryptocurrency is Cloud based mining.  CPU and even GPU mining have become cost prohibitive for most currencies, and even some ASIC setups may fail to return your investment due to the extremely high cost of hardware, and ever changing technology.

We recommend the cloud based scrypt mining strategy of ScryptCC:

In order to minimize the cost of mining, and reduce the risks associated with investing in hardware mining rigs, many cryptocoin miners have opted for cloud mining.  This the EASIEST way to mine cryptocurrency, and also helps protect you from advances in hardware and software technology.

If you are curious about what Th/s, Gh/s, Mh/s, or Kh/s mining your current hardware can achieve, the steps below will help you easily setup to mine cryptocurrency with a CPU or GPU mining rig.

You can also use these steps to setup most of the newer ASIC miners, such as the A2 Terminator and Dualminer, which use cgminer.
